Description

Growth Form: short-lived perennial or sometimes annual herbs.

Stems: Stems decumbent.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, sometimes opposite. Blades reniform to suborbicular. Margins entire to palmately lobed. Palmately veined. Long-petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers solitary, axillary. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx deeply 5-lobed, the lobes slightly unequal. Corolla bilabiate, upper lip overlapping lower lip in bud, 5-lobed, upper lip 2– lobed, lower lip 3-lobed, the tube short, spurred at base on ventral side, throat closed by a prominent, usually pubescent palate. Stamens 4, didynamous, included in corolla tube; anthers glabrous, somewhat coherent. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, with as many cells; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Capsules globose; opening by 2 apical pores; the valves splitting into 3 parts. Seeds usually numerous; tuberculate; ridged; or alveolate.
